Summary
This article describes how to configure the Spectrum component of ScheduALL Connector to write diagnostic information as log files to assist with troubleshooting problems. This logging is often requested by the ScheduALL support team, but it can also be useful to ScheduALL administrators.
Affected Software
ScheduALL Spectrum v5.00 and later
Prerequisites
To complete this procedure, you must locate and edit the Spectrum configuration file. By default, it is located here:
C:\ScheduALL5\Spectrum\Web.config
If there are multiple instances of a ScheduALL system on the same machine (e.g. in a test environment), there may be multiple instances of the ScheduALL software. Make sure to work in the folder corresponding to the instance for which the logs must be generated.
Procedure
Enable Logging
To enable logging by the Spectrum application:
- Create a folder named TEMP in the C: drive (e.g., C:\TEMP). The log files produced by this procedure will be created in that folder.
- Navigate to the installation folder for the Spectrum application as described above.
- Archive any existing files with the .log extension, by either copying to a separate folder or adding them to a ZIP file, and then remove the .log files from the local folder.
- Create a copy of the configuration file and rename it (e.g., Web.config.backup).
- Locate the icon for Notepad or your preferred text editor. Right-click the icon, click More, and click Run as administrator.
- Open the Spectrum configuration file (Web.config) in the text editor.
- Scroll to the bottom of the file. The last line will read “</configuration>”. With the cursor at the beginning of that line, press the Enter key to insert a blank line above it.
- With the cursor on the blank line you just created, paste the following:
<system.diagnostics>
<sources>
<source name="System.ServiceModel" switchValue="Verbose,ActivityTracing" propagateActivity="true">
<listeners>
<add type="System.Diagnostics.DefaultTraceListener" name="Default">
<filter type="" />
</add>
<add name="ServiceModelTraceListener">
<filter type="" />
</add>
</listeners>
</source>
</sources>
<sharedListeners>
<add initializeData="C:\TEMP\Web_tracelog.svclog" type="System.Diagnostics.XmlWriterTraceListener, System, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089" name="ServiceModelTraceListener" traceOutputOptions="Timestamp">
<filter type="" />
</add>
</sharedListeners>
</system.diagnostics> - Save the changes.
- Restart the IIS service, using either an Administrator-level PowerShell console or a Windows command line with the command: iisreset
- Perform the steps needed to reproduce the error you are experiencing.
The Spectrum application creates a file named Web_tracelog.svclog in C:\TEMP. Send this file and any *.log files in the C:\ScheduALL5\Spectrum\ folder to ScheduALL support.
Disable Logging
Once all the requested log files have been collected and sent to ScheduALL support, disable the logging options that were enabled in this document. The easiest way to do this is to restore the backup copy of the Web.config you created at the beginning of this procedure.
