Summary
This article describes how to configure the ScheduALL for Windows client application to write detailed diagnostic information as log files to assist with diagnosing problems. This logging is often requested by the ScheduALL Support team, but it can also be useful to ScheduALL administrators.
Affected Software
ScheduALL for Windows client application, all versions
Procedure
Enable Verbose Logging
- Create a shortcut on your Windows desktop to the ScheduALL for Windows client application executable (e.g., C:\ScheduALL5\schedwin\schedwin.exe). (Note: this is the default install location for ScheduALL, your system may vary.)
- Right-click the shortcut and click Properties.
- In the Target field, and add a space and LOG VERBOSE to the end, such as:
C:\ScheduALL5\Schedwin\SchedWin.exe LOG VERBOSE
- Click OK to save the changes.
- Double-click the edited icon to launch the ScheduALL application.
- Recreate the error you are experiencing.
The application creates a log file named sched.log in the folder indicated in the Start in: line of the shortcut (usually C:\ScheduALL5\Schedwin\). Send this log file to ScheduALL support often requests. Please note: if you launch ScheduALL desktop again, the log file will be overwritten!
Enable Advanced Logging
- Enable verbose logging as described above.
- Navigate to the ScheduALL for Windows installation folder. By default this is C:\ScheduALL5\Schedwin\.
- Create a copy of the Schedwin.exe.config file and rename it, e.g. Schedwin.exe.config.backup.
- Use Notepad or your preferred text editor to open the Schedwin.exe.config file.
- Locate the line that reads:
<appSettings>
- Add the following lines immediately below that line:
<add key="Log" value="True" />
...adjusting the path in LogName to match the appropriate folder.
<add key="LogVerbose" value="True" />
<add key="LogName" value="C:\ScheduALL5\Schedwin\schedwin_core.log" />
<add key="LogConcatenation" value="False"/> - Save the changes to the file.
- Launch the ScheduALL application using the shortcut created in the previous procedure and recreate the error you are experiencing.
The application creates a log file named schedwin_core.log in the appropriate installation folder (e.g., C:\ScheduALL5\Schedwin\). Send this file, along with the other logs mentioned previously, to ScheduALL Support.
Disable Logging
Once all the requested log files have been collected and sent to ScheduALL support, disable the logging options that were enabled in this document:
- Restore the backup copy of Schedwin.exe.config you created at the beginning of this procedure.
- Remove the copy of the ScheduALL shortcut that contains the verbose logging commands.
