Summary
This article describes how to configure the ScheduALL Application Services to write diagnostic information as log files to assist with troubleshooting problems. This logging is often requested by the ScheduALL Support team, but it can also be useful to ScheduALL administrators.
Affected Software
ScheduALL Application Services v5.00 and later
Prerequisites
To perform this procedure, you must locate and edit the Application Services configuration file. By default, it is located here:
C:\ScheduALL5\SchedAppServices\VizuALL.ServiceHost.exe.config
If there are multiple instances of a ScheduALL system on the same machine (e.g. in a test environment), there may be multiple instances of the ScheduALL software. Make sure to work in the folder corresponding to the instance for which the logs must be generated for all the following procedures.
Procedure
Enable Verbose Logging
Verbose logging provides more detail than basic logging from within the Application Services logic at the application level. To enable this logging:
- Navigate to the installation folder for the Application Services as described above.
- Create a copy of the configuration file and rename it, e.g., VizuALL.ServiceHost.exe.config.backup
- Archive any existing files with the .log extension, by either copying to a separate folder or adding them to a ZIP file, and then remove the .log files from the local folder. (
- Locate the icon for Notepad or your preferred text editor. Right-click the icon, click More, and click Run as administrator.
- Open the Application Services configuration file (VizuALL.ServiceHost.exe.config) in the text editor.
- In the <appSettings> section near the top, Locate the key="Log" and key="LogVerbose" settings, and set them to True: <add key="Log" value="true"/> <add key="LogVerbose" value="true"/>
- Save the file.
- Restart ScheduALL Application Services service using either the Servcies management console (services.msc) OR an Administrator-level PowerShell window with the command: Restart-Service -Name 'ScheduALL Application Services'
- Perform the steps to reproduce the error you are experiencing.
- The system produces multiple log files, such as scheduall.log and SchedAppServices01.log. Please send ALL files with the .log extension to ScheduALL Support.
Enable Advanced Logging
Verbose logging provides detailed logging from within the Application Services logic at the system service level. To enable this logging:
- Create a folder named TEMP in the C: drive (e.g., C:\TEMP). The log files produced by this procedure will be created in that folder.
- Navigate to the installation folder for the Application Services as described above.
- Create a copy of the configuration file and rename it, e.g., VizuALL.ServiceHost.exe.config.backup
- Locate the icon for a text editor such as Notepad. Right-click the icon, click More, and click Run as administrator.
- Open the Application Services configuration file (VizuALL.ServiceHost.exe.config) in the text editor.
- Locate these lines:
<!--
<system.diagnostics> - Remove the comment tag ( <!-- ) in the first line completely, leaving a blank line in its place.
- Next, locate these lines:
<switches>
<add name="AssignStatus" value="0" />
<add name="ProfileSwitch" value="0" />
<add name="UserConversion" value="0" />
<add name="SysPrefs" value="0" />
<add name="Availability" value="0" />
<add name="Storage" value="0" />
<add name="ChorusSwitch" value="0" />
</switches> - Change all their values to "4".
- Locate these lines:
</system.diagnostics>
--> - Remove the comment tag ( --> ) in the second line completely, leaving a blank line in its place.
- Save the changes.
- Restart ScheduALL Application Services service using either the Services management console (services.msc) OR an Administrator-level PowerShell window with the command: Restart-Service -Name 'ScheduALL Application Services'
- Perform the steps needed to reproduce the error you are experiencing.
- The system produces multiple log files, such as servertrace.log and server.svclog in the C:\TEMP folder. Please send ALL files with the .log and .svclog extensions to ScheduALL Support.
Disable Logging
Once all the requested log files have been collected and sent to ScheduALL support, you should disable the logging options that were enabled in this document. The easiest way to do this is to restore the backup copy of VizuALL.ServiceHost.exe.config you created before beginning this procedure.
